We’re Sending Out an SOS…

Sew for Our Schools

Although schools in our region have begun the school year online, at some point kids and teachers will go back to school — and they will need extra masks.

That’s why we’re putting out an SOS to Sew for Our Schools! And providing free, donated supplies to make it easy for you to help. (Find out how to reserve your supplies below…)

Some districts are opening childcare centers for frontline workers. Others have announced they will phase back in kids, starting with children with specific needs. In the meantime, we continue to field requests for basic adult and pediatric masks from groups that align with our mission. We’d like to respond quickly to these needs later in the fall, especially for a variety of organizations who are helping our most vulnerable kids. We also want to show support for the teachers and staff — who would make it possible for some face-to-face instruction to resume.

This project will provide donated supplies so that our Craftivists can create about 30,000 more masks to distribute within our region. A very generous corporate sponsor donated over 900 lbs (!!) of 100% cotton fabric so Million Mask Challenge craftivists can continue to sew. We’ve prepared SOS Fabric Packs to get this material into your hands as quickly as possible!

Student with Mask

Our SOS packs contain enough material and elastic to make more than 100 pediatric masks, although the pieces are not pre-cut. You can also make up to 60 adult-sized masks with the materials. In addition, we are including toggles and a hook tool for you to have, to make the masks adjustable.

You may request to reserve supplies below… on a first-come, first-served basis. The only requirement is that you return the masks made to one of our official MMC collection boxes when you are done. The deadline to answer the SOS, sew, and return masks to us is October 1st.

Reserve Supplies for Yourself or Your Group!

Project Reminders:

Toggle Tool How-To Photo

Please use the Basic Mask Pattern, but make the elastic loops a little longer.

Use 9 inches of elastic on each side for adults, and for kids, 8 inches. Toggles can then be added for adjustability. We have included a crochet hook to make it easier for you.

When you are finished, please drop off your completed masks at your normal collection box. We invite you to post photos on Facebook using #mmcsewsforschools so we can share results!
